Foreword by H.H. Katok Getse Mahäpandita
Namo guru Mañjushri ye!
Namo guru Mañjushri ye!
THIS LUCID COMMENTARY on the close lineage of severance, or chöd, entitled An Ambrosia Ocean of Sublime Explanations by Pema Lungtok Gyatso[a] is a most excellent treatise that resembles a wish-fulfilling jewel or how all rivers converge with the ocean, in that it brings together the profound key points of the Sutra, Mantra, and Terma traditions without exception. In these degenerate times, the Great Tertön, Vidyadhara Dudjom Lingpa[b]— an emanation of the glorious great guru Dorje Drolöd[c]—appeared to guide disciples. The crown ornament of the one-hundred mahasiddhas of India was the great master Saraha[d][1], who -through pure clear-light visionary awareness- bestowed the blessings of the aural lineage upon Dudjom Lingpa in the manner of the inseparable wisdom mind of teacher and retinue.
These are the sacred instructions that grant liberation to fortunate ones in a single lifetime by means of realizing the dharmakäya rainbow body. This profound chöd commentary of the close lineage[2] sustains the warmth of the dakini's breath and includes teachings that inspire the mind to practice dharma, beginning with the common four thoughts that turn the mind. So that dharma will become the path, there are seven categories of instructions that include the uncommon cycles of refuge and so forth. So that confusion will be pacified on the path, the specific instructions on ka dag trekchö[e] are given. So that confused appearances will dawn as wisdom, there are also the additional instructions for the six-month tögal[f] practice that is part of the terma revelation. If this sacred transmission that is complete and unerring is practiced according to the teachings, then liberation will be brought about in a single lifetime.
During the life of the Tertön himself, there were close to twenty disciples who actually attained the rainbow body through mastery over the four elements.

xxii : DUDJOM LINGPA'S CHÖD Unscathed by poisons and the like, an inconceivable number of accomplished vidyādharas[a] were produced. Over the course of three generations, there have continued to be disciples who achieved the rainbow body as this was predicted by the Tertön himself:
For three generations, if the continuity of these profound transmissions remains uninterrupted, there will be some one-hundred vidyadharas who will attain the rainbow body.
Thus, he spoke.
This profound method for the severance of the maras was composed by the incarnation of Gyalsey Zhenpen Tayey[b], the omniscient Kyabje Lingtrul Pema Lungtok Gyatso, who was the dharma keeper for all terma revelations of Dudjom Lingpa. He received many empowerments, teachings, and transmissions from the Great Tertön directly and received permission to compose this commentary from the Tertön as well. In addition to that, many principal disciples requested that this commentary be written, including the heart disciple Dorje Namgyal[c] from Rekong who was principal among the thousands of ngakpa[d] lineage holders. Based upon the oral-transmission teachings of the Great Tertön himself, this commentary illuminates hidden meanings, clarifies obscure points, and arranges the order of presentation in a comprehensive way.
The framework for this commentary is based upon the root terma, and that is adorned with the upadeśa[e][3] of the father lineage of upāya[f], the mother lineage of prajñā[g], the nondual lineage of union, and the experiential lineage of the realized ones that are extracted from the teachings of the Buddha[h] the termas, and pure visions. This sublime explanation is the king of all commentaries on the subject of severance. If practiced according to the text itself, then -like how alchemy can transform iron into gold-the chronic disease of the passions will be pacified. Hence, this is like a supreme ambrosia among medicine.
From the point of the four common thoughts that turn the mind through the stage of the union of the two accumulations, the harmonious joining of empty appearances, and inseparable generation and completion all the way to
FOREWORD BY H.H KATOK GETSE MAHÄPANDITA : xxiii the Great Perfection[a] itself, the sacred oral instructions involved here are lacking in nothing. Hence, the meaning of the style of presentation is rich like the jewel treasury of the nãgas found in the depth of the great ocean. These days, it is difficult to encounter a treatise of this caliber that, until now, has not been widely distributed.

I would like to thank the intelligent and well-intended Lama Chönam, who possesses many sacred lineage blessings, for undertaking the translation of this project into the English language. In addition, I offer heartfelt gratitude to the wise and exceptional lotsawa Sangye Khandro, who has diligently studied the Tibetan language and become fluent. Having determined all doubts concerning the innermost meaning of Sutra and Mantra in the presence of many sublime masters, she has great devotion toward the teachings of the Buddha and a pure intention to serve beings. In particular, she has exceptional devotion for this lineage of practice. I rejoice that, together, they have accomplished the task of translating this commentary into English.
Not only that, these days, teachings have become sullied by those who fail to realize the true meaning, have incorrect comprehension, or decide to include their own opinions and personal agenda. May this teaching cleanse those negative habits that actually bring ruin to the minds of beings. Just like during the time of the Great Tertön's life and legacy of heirs and disciples, I offer the prayer that, through these efforts, every direction may be filled with male and female practitioners who accomplish vidyadharahood and attain the rainbow body.
This was written by the one who holds the name of the Fourth Getse of Katok.
